Erwin R. Gonzalez
Who Do I Think I Am? This is the most direct question I have ever been asked.
My name is Erwin R. Gonzalez. I have spent almost two decades as a fitness professional based in New York City. Being paid to teach exercise was once an alien concept. When I was a kid I thought I would be an astronaut or a lawyer. An astronaut because I was born in the Summer of 1969. A lawyer because I never back down from a fight. It was never even a thought I’d be a Fitness Pro, or a writer. Yet here I am prospering in an competitive industry in one of the most iconic cities in the world. Who knew?
You see for much of my Life, I allowed myself to be defined by other people’s opinions of me. I was told I was bad at sports and I didn’t say “No.” I would move on. What I didn’t do was move forward. It wasn’t until one day, I looked at myself in the mirror, shirt off and could see myself honestly. This was the day my Life changed. I realized if I didn’t change course my future would involve rehabilitation and not injury prevention.
Without a dime in my pocket and no fitness background, I dug in my heels. Determined to alter the trajectory of my Life, I sat on the floor in the local Barnes and Noble reading magazines and taking notes. I couldn’t afford to buy the magazine but I could copy it. Little did I know that one day, I would be writing for them.
Flash forward 20 years, I have integrated the many elements I believe account for healthy living and inspired fitness in my career and my personal life. To that effect, I created KINETIC Sculpt™, which represents my approach to my body, and The Perspiration Journal, my hard won Life lessons.
I AM A TEACHER. I am not pretending to be a guru who knows-it-all (as much as I like to know-it-all). What I am is a human being who has fallen and gotten up time and again. Sometimes I have gotten up more successfully than others but I always get up. I am brutally honest and I don’t like to mince words. It just wastes precious time. At any age, there is so much to learn, to know, to be humble for. Life is a continuum. If you are lucky, you are gifted another 365 days of trial and error.
My workout programs and philosophy have been featured in magazines like Shape, FItness, Genre, Diet & Exercise, and FIT magazine. I appeared in Men’s Journal. My TV appearances have been WPIX Ch 11 Morning Show, NY News 1, NY FOX News 5 and ESPN.
