Racing Against Age: Health Impairment Primarily Due to Bad Lifestye Habits — Not Aging, Researchers Argue
Impairments to health and physical performance are not primarily a result of aging but of unfavorable lifestyle habits and lack of exercise. This is the position taken by Dieter Leyk and his coauthors in the new issue ofDeutsches Ärzteblatt International.
Sporty elderly people have a life expectancy that is almost 4 years higher and are often faster than younger athletes.
Of note: older participants do not have to train any harder to maintain their fitness than their younger rivals
Emotional Intelligence Peaks as We Enter Our 60s, Research Suggests
Older people have a hard time keeping a lid on their feelings, especially when viewing heartbreaking or disgusting scenes in movies and reality shows, psychologists have found. But they’re better than their younger counterparts at seeing the positive side of a stressful situation and empathizing with the less fortunate, according to research from the University of California, Berkeley.
Why age 60 is the new 40 for employers
Older people bring skills and experience to the workplace that can be an asset to business.
That was the message from UK Business Minister Pat McFadden to industry and charities after he brought together experts from both sectors to discuss the economic challenges and opportunities of an ageing population.
“As we continue to invest in growth, we need to make the most of all our talent: and that means harnessing the skills of the older generation as well as the young,” he said. “This will put us in the strongest possible position going forward.”
By 2050 more than a third of Europe’s population is expected to be over 60 years old. This means that there will be different pressures on services than there are today, but it also means a population with different needs and skills.
If businesses can adapt to the needs of this older group, then the rewards could be significant.

Anti-wrinkle face serums: Tests show inflated claims and limited results

Regular Exercise Reduces Large Number of Health Risks Including Dementia and Some Cancers, Study Finds
Regular exercise can reduce around two dozen physical and mental health conditions and slow down how quickly the body ages, according to a research review summarising the key findings of 40 papers published between 2006 and 2010.
Health benefits identified by the review include:
- Regular moderate to intense physical activity is associated with decreased risk of coronary heart disease and ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke.
- A growing body of evidence suggests that increasing physical activity can also reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure.
- Evidence of the beneficial effects of physical activity in the primary prevention and management of cancer is growing and there is an association between higher levels of physical activity and lower cancer death rates.
- Research has found that walking or cycling for at least an half-an-hour a day is associated with a reduction in cancer and that when this is increased to an hour cancer incidence falls by 16 per cent.
- Evidence is mixed when it comes to specific cancers. Research has shown a strong relationship between increased physical activity and reduced colon cancer in both sexes. And men who are more active at work — not just sitting at a desk — have lower rates of prostate cancer.
- Other cancer studies show that physical activity after diagnosis can aid recovery and improve outcomes.
- Studies have also shown that men who are physically active are less likely to experience erection problems.
- There is growing evidence that physical activity could decrease the risk of dementia in the elderly.
